A Bass[sic] Free Music Bonanza!

Hi everyone. Since our last post on here, we here at Bass[sic] HQ have been quite busy with our various projects, gigs, summer holidays, getting married, having babies and so on and so forth, as you do! Anyway, as a result of our various endeavours this month, we’ve got a bumper crop of free music for your lovely ears. Are you sitting comfortably? Then let’s begin…

We’ve Gone Promo Mix Crazy!

It must be the sunny weather here in the UK that’s been inspiring us, because all three Bass[sic] residents have serendipitously knocked together respective promo mixes for you to stream and download to your heart’s content…

  • To kick off, here is Big Nick D‘s latest monthly promo mix – Big Nick D. August Mix 2013 – crammed full of summertime tech house and techno, including choice cuts by the likes of Basement Jaxx, Tiefschwarz and Green Velvet, to name but a few! Make sure you check out the rest of Big Nick D‘s Mixcloud too!
  • Next up is a banging mix from newly-married duo Rejectbeats – featuring electro, breaks and house bangers by the likes of Plump DJs, Evil Nine, Foamo and loads more! For more from the Rejects, check out rejectbeats.co.uk!
  • Lastly, we have a summer-themed mix from HubieTake California – Mixed By Hubie – including house of the dirty and techy variety by the likes of Claude VonStroke, Julio Bashmore, Fatboy Slim and many more! Don’t forget to check out the rest of Hubie‘s Mixcloud too!

Bass[sic] @ The Elite Force Boat Party 2013

Finally we’ve got each of our resident DJs’ sets recorded live in the Bass[sic] room on board this year’s sweltering Elite Force Boat Party. These mixes were broadcast in their entirety as part of the Hubie Sounds show on NSB Radio and can be streamed and downloaded via the Hubie Sounds Mixcloud…

  • Hubie Sounds 070 – Featuring Rejectbeats‘ boat party set, plus fresh beats and classic tunes by the likes of Stanton Warriors, New Order and Coldcut
  • Hubie Sounds 071 – Featuring Hubie‘s boat party set, plus classic club bangers and anthems by the likes of Beastie Boys, DeeJay Punk-Roc and The Chemical BrothersTom Rowlands
  • Hubie Sounds 072 – Featuring Big Nick D‘s boat party set, plus a laid back selection of tunes by the likes of Lemon Jelly, Flight Of The Conchords and General Levy
  • And last but certainly not least, we thought we’d include a link to the main man himself – Elite Force‘s set recorded live at this year’s boat party, which you can stream and download via his Soundcloud

Alrighty, that should keep your ears and asses busy for the remaining summer days!

That’s about it from us for now. Watch this space for updates regarding our next party, coming soon, all being well.

Big Nick D’s Summertime Six

Having seen Hubie’s Fearsome Five back in June, Bass[sic] resident Big Nick D wanted to get in on the top tunes action. In fact he didn’t just want to match Hubie‘s sublime selection, he wanted to go one better! So here it is – Big Nick D’s Summertime Six

1. Zodiac Cartel – How U Feel? [U&A] – “A big chunky funker that I just can’t get enough of. Despite the letter “U” instead of the word “you”, this tune is almost perfection. The often attempted, but rarely achieved trinity of soul, tech and pure whomp is in full effect here. Future classic?”

2. Justin Martin – Ghettos & Gardens (Claude VonStroke Beverly Hills Coyote Mix) [Dirtybird] – “Two of my all time favourite producers, Martin and Vonstroke. This track just builds and builds and builds and builds and I can’t stop playing it… a permanent resident in my CD wallet.”

3. Pleasurekraft – The Main Ingredient (Richard Dinsdale Remix) [Deepalma] – “I drop a lot of Pleasurekraft when I’m playing out and I’d been playing the original of this for a while, but it’s this Dinsdale remix that excites me most. Low slung techy funk that keeps rolling, but packs a punch when pitched up a little. Sweeeet!”

4. Lee Burridge & Andy Page – Do You Smoke Pot? [Almost Anonymous] – “An oldie but a goodie that I rediscovered recently when moving some vinyl about the flat. Deep rolling tech with what sounds like a Woody Harrelson sample on it. What’s not to like? It’s a lovely record that chugs along for nearly ten minutes. Sadly I can’t find a clip on Soundcloud, but it is included in my DJ mix below.”

5. Drums Of Death – Bang The Dub [Civil Music] – “Enough with the beard stroking, chugging rollers I hear you cry. Okay, how about this bad bwoy? Hard, bouncy and devoid of sexyness, this is a real treble head masher with old skool hats and snares going off all over the place. A proper leftfield banger from DOD. I’m feeling this guy’s stuff big time lately. Bang The Dub is the second waveform in the clip.”

6. Rejectbeats – Watto (Hedstate Remix) [Big Square] – “How could I not include this summertime reworking of Rejectbeats from my own label? Yeah, it’s a cheeky plug, but it’s an ace tune, so deal with it. Hedstate keep an eye on both the head-nodders and the dancefloor for this tasty sunshine groover.”

Big ups Mr Nick! As he mentioned above, Big Nick D‘s got a brand spanking new promo mix doing the rounds at the moment, that’s chock full of the kind of tuna listed above, and you can check it out on Mixcloud RIGHT HERE!

Watch this space for more charts and fun features from our resident DJs and special guests.

Cheers!

Hubie’s Fearsome Five!

Here’s a new feature on the site dedicated to telling you, our lovely followers, what tunes are currently floating our boats, firing our lasers and filling our collective pants with excitey-goo. Too much info? Ok, maybe we should move on…

To kick off, our loveable resident DJ and pet-kiwi Hubie has given us a list of the five releases that are rocking his CD wallet at the moment. Here they are, in no particular order…

1. Little Roy – Battle For Seattle [Ark] – “I do like a good spot of dub and reggae and, as a true child of the 80s and 90s, I’m also a massive fan of grunge and Nirvana in particular. This album combines the two perfectly with a set of surprisingly excellent Nirvana covers in a rubba-dub-stylee, which never takes itself too seriously.”

2. Kry Wolf & Claude VonStroke – Turbosteppa [Dirtybird] – “This has been around for a while now and no doubt a lot of you will know it well. But at the moment this is the archetypal Tune That Never Leaves My CD Wallet. A guaranteed dancefloor filler with a bassline that makes me want to have its babies.”

3. Phil Kieran – Ghetto Face Place Space [Twin Turbo] – “Another dark, electro-tinged, techy banger, that just screams ‘get your stomp on’! I don’t know where Phil’s been in recent years but if he keeps popping out tunes like this then I will happily buy them on sight.”

4. Tom Rowlands – Nothing But Pleasure [Phantasy] – “Taking a break from writing tunes as part of one of the greatest dance acts of all time, the Chemical Brothers‘ Tom has put out a banging two-track EP on Erol Alkan‘s Phantasy label, the highlight of which, for me, is the epic techno-tastic Nothing But Pleasure. This track builds and builds until you can take no more and, just when you think you’re about to melt into a puddle of anxious techno-goo, it drops causing all who hear it to go full retard in the best possible way. Lovely stuff.”

5. Birdee – We Don’t Fool Around [Moveltraxx] – “This one just oozes summery vibes. And with the sun finally deciding to come out and dance here in the UK, there isn’t a more perfect tune to throw on whilst frolicking outside in your underwear. And as an added bonus, you can grab this tune absolutely gratis via the soundcloud below…”

That’s it from Hubie for now. You can catch him DJing along with the rest of the Bass[sic] residents, as well as some fellas called Evil Nine, Purge and Jung, at Bells Of Shoreditch next week, on Friday 14th June. For more info about this mega party, go HERE!

In the meantime, we intend to continue this feature on a regular basis, as long as we remember to do it (!), with further charts and stuff from our other resident DJs, as well as our guest DJs. Watch this space!

See ya at Bells Of Shoreditch next week!

Bass[sic] Chats With Meat Katie

Morning everyone! There’s just over a week to go ’til party time (full details HERE!), so we thought it was a good time to publish the second of our interviews with our special guest DJs.

Ahead of a very rare London appearance, we’ve managed to get superstar DJ, and headliner at Bass[sic] on the 29th of March, to take five minutes out of his busy schedule to answer a few important questions. He’s a tour de force, a runaway tech-funk train, an unstoppable bass behemoth, a dance music legend:- he is of course Meat Katie, aka Mark Pember, and we’re very excited to have him gracing the decks at this month’s Bass[sic]. Best known for his tough techy dancefloor destroyers, Pember has worked with and remixed some of dance music’s biggest household names, from James Zabiela and Deep Dish to Boy George and UNKLE. As well as having three Meat Katie albums under his belt he also supplies the world with some of the finest techno, tech-funk and breaks via his LOT49 imprint. He’s warmed up for The Chemical Brothers, played tunes on the Valve Soundsystem and now you can find out how he likes his eggs…

Bass[sic]: To kick off… You and Peo de Pitte make up one of the biggest lineups we’ve had at Bass[sic], but did you know that you’re probably the baldest lineup too? Of the two of you, who do you think has the LEAST body hair overall?
Meat Katie: Probably me, as I go for the full body wax.

Bass[sic]: For those people who are unfamiliar with you, how would you sum up the Meat Katie sound in only 3 words?
MK: Breakbeat without breaks.

Bass[sic]: Moving onto the dancefloor, which tune are you most looking forward to dropping at Bass[sic] on the 29th of March?
MK: This! What a cheap plug!

Bass[sic]: Of all of the massive tunes that have been released over the years, what is the one tune that you wish you’d written or signed to your label?
MK: The Loops of Fury – Flick A Switch.

Bass[sic]: Now onto the serious questions that everyone’s been dying to know the answers to… How do you prefer your eggs to be cooked?
MK: Poached of course.

Bass[sic]: What’s the last album you bought on CD?
MK: Yesterday I bought The Jim Jones Revue – The Savage Heart

Bass[sic]: Who would win in a jelly wrestling contest:- you or Peo de Pitte?
MK: Me! Peo is a pussy.

Bass[sic]: Which do you prefer:- cats or dogs?
MK: Erm… that’s a tough one… pass!

Bass[sic]: Star Wars or Star Trek?
MK: It used to be Star Wars, now it’s Star Trek.

Bass[sic]: How much horse is there in a standard serving of Meat Katie?
MK: You will have to discover that for yourself.

Bass[sic]: Would you rather be trapped in a room with 1 horse-sized chicken? Or 10 chicken-sized breakbeat purists?
MK: Probably the big chicken horse thing.

Bass[sic]: Do you have a musical guilty pleasure?
MK: Stanton Warriors.

Bass[sic]: What was the last movie you went to see at the cinema?
MK: I’ve not been for a while to tell the truth. Maybe The Hunger Games.

Bass[sic]: Do you have any hidden talents?
MK: All my talents are hidden, in fact I don’t even know what they are!

Bass[sic]: And finally, what are you up to for the rest of this year? Releases, gigs, tours, etc?
MK: I have a residency at Tresor in Berlin at Dangerous Drums. I’m just releasing our latest Take Miami compilation on LOT49. I’ve just signed Electric Soulside & The Rogue Element to LOT49, which I am a bit excited about. I have a Facebook page where I moan a lot about stuff that is not really music related. I have a Gigatools account where I am supposed to have my gig dates, although ironically I always forget to update it. I’m touring the States and Mexico in April and at the end of May/June, also Australia and New Zealand in December. I have also been building a website for the last 15 years… I’m pretty close to getting that finished (as someone else is helping now). I’m thinking of buying another corn snake for my daughter (but a different colour). My friend Andy is getting married in April, I’m definitely going to that. It’s in Colchester. It’s my birthday in September. I can’t think of anything else I have to do at the moment!

Thanks for chatting with us Mark! You can catch him dropping all of his favourite tech-funk bangers at Bass[sic] at the Bells of Shoreditch, East London, on Good Friday, 29th March! Full event details can be found HERE!

To help get you in the mood for the party, check out Meat Katie‘s latest promo mix…

And don’t forget to download Meat Katie‘s latest Re-Rub, absolutely gratis…

And finally, make sure you have a listen to our Easter Podcast, chock full of banging beats and filthy bass!

Right, that’s it! See you down the front at Bells Of Shoreditch next week! We’ll post an event reminder in a few day’s time to make sure you’re kept up to speed!
